Disability Access Educator

Organization Description:

Arizona Statewide Independent Living Council (AZSILC) is a federally mandated Council established under Title VII, Section 705 of the Rehabilitation Act, as amended. In Arizona, Executive Order No.2007-15 documents the general provision of the Council. AZSILC is a nonprofit corporation that addresses issues related to the ability of individuals who have disabilities to live independently. The majority of Council/Board Members and Staff are individuals who have disabilities.

Position Summary:

The Disability Access Educator works in partnership with the disability community, public and governmental entities, and key individuals to promote greater awareness of disability concerns related to personal emergency and disaster preparedness and planning; coordinates and supports the Access and Functional Needs Taskforce; and works collaboratively with Centers for Independent Living, local and state emergency managers, and other partners in regard to emergency preparedness response, recovery, mitigation, and preparedness.

Key Functions and Responsibilities:

• Works collaboratively with a variety of emergency preparedness and planning entities; coordinates administrative processes for the Access and Functional Needs Taskforce.

• Educates, informs, and promotes accessible, inclusive, disaster planning throughout Arizona and beyond; connects to and engages with the broader emergency preparedness movement, as relevant and beneficial.

• Provides guidance and technical support to local, county, and state agencies to assist with ensuring that people who have disabilities and those who have access and functional needs have equal access to programs and services.

• Develops, implements, monitors, and reports upon AZSILC Emergency Preparedness Initiatives in conjunction with related contracts and in accordance with the State Plan for Independent Living, and AZSILC Strategic Plan.

• Contributes to the production, publication, and distribution of organizational marketing/promotional materials.

• Upholds AZSILC mission and contributes to successful outcomes related to the State Plan for Independent Living, and other assignments.

• Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, and ordinances, including documentation and reporting.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree and prior experience with disability inclusion in emergency preparedness preferred. A combination of education and relevant work experience may substitute. Preferred experience working in a Center for Independent Living or State Independent Living Council.

• Personal and professional experience with disability rights, and the Independent Living Movement, and philosophy.

• Personal and professional experience with the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

• Familiarity with emergency preparedness activities, procedures, and practices; or demonstrated ability and commitment to gain such expertise.

• Effective interpersonal skills; demonstrated proficiency in written communication; ability to communicate clearly, succinctly, in public, and using multimodalities.

• Demonstrated ability and commitment to work with diverse and multicultural populations.

• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Working Conditions:

• Full-time, salaried, exempt position.

• In state travel, and occasional out of state travel required.

• Establish and work remotely from a home office located within the greater Phoenix area, utilizing technology to perform the essential functions of the position.


Starting Salary $40,000
